The worst thing I did to my mental health this year was decide to take a break from travel so I could save for one of my financial goals. Fast-forward to December, and not only have I concluded that the goal was not worth it, but the only thing that has been getting me through the last couple weeks is knowing I have a trip booked for the holidays.

Being excited about this trip is also a bit of a paradox. I grew up in Jamaica and experienced my first winter in 2014 when I went to college in New York. As luck would have it, my first proper snowfall experience was a snowstorm that resulted in a blackout the night be Thanksgiving. The novelty and excitement of seeing snow quickly wore off and instead I discovered a little thing called Seasonal Affective Dsiorder. Since then, I always tried to book myself a trip during the winter to escape to southern USA or back to Jamaica to give myself a break from the winter cold and blues.

Fast forward to 2023 and I moved back to Jamaica. Without thinking it through properly, I booked myself a trip to Park City, Utah. OHHHHH, yes! I, Juleen, willingly subjected myself to the cold up in the mountains. I really wasn’t thinking clearly. Anyway, I was happy to find that maybe I can enjoy the beauty of a white Christmas in small doses. (To be fair, that isn’t all that surprising since I wasn’t completely unhappy all winter, every winter when I lived in the northeast.)

So, I’ve once again decided to test the winter gods and booked another snowy holiday trip. This time, I’ll be visiting two ski towns over two weeks and I’ve dared myself to even try skiing *internal scream*. As I mentioned, the excitement of this trip has been keeping me sane so I decided to add a fun spin and make it into a bucket list bingo. Will I give myself a prize if I actually hit bingo? I haven’t thought that far yet, to be honest, but maybe the experiences themselves will be their own reward.

Sooooo, here is my bucket list for my upcoming winter 2024 trip!

Quintessential Christmas holiday activities:

  1. Attend a Christmas concert or watch Christmas carolling. Tis the season after all. Alternatively, I’d love to go watch the Nutcracker, if possible, but that seems unlikely.
  2. Walk around and admire Christmas lights. Did someone say Christmas photo shoot?
  3. Check out a Christmas market. Christmas markets are also so cute with all their holiday goodies and last-minute gift options.
  4. Visit a Christmas tree farm. I’ve never visited a Christmas tree farm. The trees sorta just pop up out of nowhere (lol). So this year, I’d really like to visit a tree farm and pretend I’m  in a holiday movie.
  5. Watch the New Year’s fireworks. How else should I ring in the new year?
  6. Make mulled wine. This is another thing I tell myself I’ll do every year but somehow time passes and I haven’t done it. I’ve had mulled wine before, but I’ve never made it myself.
  7. Enjoy some hot chocolate by a fire/fireplace. Is there a more cosy way to deal with the cold?
  8. Do a Christmas scavenger hunt. Since a part of this trip will be with friends, I’m hoping this is a fun activity we can do together.
  9. Wear Christmas pajamas. At some point, I have to dress the part, right?

Snow activities

  1. Take a ski lesson. I’ve always been afraid to try skiing out of fear of getting hurt but maybe now I’m ready.
  2. Take a snowboard lesson. Same idea as skiing, though I must admit I’ve considered snowboarding even less than skiing.
  3. Go snowtubing. I’m not sure why I haven’t done this yet. It’s one of those things that’s relatively easy to do (compared to skiing/snowboarding) yet just hasn’t been done.
  4. Go sledding. Same thing as snowtubing but even more shocking. This is something I should have done in college but
  5. Go ice skating. I’ve been ice skating once or twice. I’m not good, but every year I tell myself I’ll give it another try. Is this just another year of me lying to myself?
  6. Make snow angels. The list of things I can’t believe I’ve still not done yet is just too long
  7. Make a snowman. I know, I know. The list of things that I should have done by now just keeps getting longer.
  8. Have a snowball fight. Now, this is something I’ve done before but who says this list has to be only things I’ve never done before.
  9. Check out the apres-ski scene. Did you know this was a thing? I did not! I wish I knew this last winter when I visited my first ski town and had no plans of skiing. It’s like happy hour for skiers.
  10. Make s’mores. I’m not sure how practical this will be since I won’t have skewers or might not be able to use an open fire, but there’s always a stove and/or oven.

A reminder to relax

  1. Enjoy a bubble bath. It is a vacation after all.
  2. Spend a day doing nothing. This might not be a traditional thing to but on a bucket list but I wanted a reminder that it is still a holiday so rest if important.
  3. Check out the hotel hot tub. This will be very useful after skiing/snowboarding, I’ve read but even without those activities, I need no convincing.

Other activites

  1. Do a boudoir photoshoot. To be fair, this has nothing to do with the holidays but this is another bucket list item of mine so since I’m trying to knock things off my bucket list, why not add this one?
  2. Enjoy a festive charcuterie board (or a regular one). I’m not sure how exactly a charcuterie board stops being regular and crossing over into festive. We’ll just have to wait and see.

So that’s my bucket list. Of course, this does not mean that I will only limit myself to these activities but instead I hope this will be a source of motivation if the S.A.D. blues do hit or if the comfort of my hotel room is too strong lol.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas?
